"Fledermaus" Sofa
A rare version of the so called "Fledermaus" model sofa by Josef Hoffmann for by Mundus AG.
The so called "Fledermaus" sofa was initially designed and produced in 1907 for cabaret show "Fledermaus" in Vienna, hence its name. Sir Waerndorfer assigned the Wiener Werkstätte group to design the complete physical lay out of this cabaret show. Combined forces like graphic designers, ceramicists ánd furniture designers got eventually to this total "gesamt" work of art.
The first series of the Fledermaus sofa got produced by Joseph & Kohn. Mundus as a company took over Joseph & Kohn in 1914. In the early 1920's it was Thonet which took over Mundus, among 6 other companies. The production of the these sofa's then moved towards Czech Republic (due to political reasons) in the former factory of Joseph & Kohn. It is fair to say that our Mundus version of the Fledermaus can be considered as an "in betweener".
