An antique chair model "21" designed and manufactured by Gebrüders Thonet, Austria 1870's. A very rare and collectable chair, this model "number 21"; a piece of furniture design's history. The chair is in good, antique condition. The chair is slightly wobbly and shows age related signs of wear. A small section of the original Thonet sticker can still be seen on the bottom of the chair.
Bentwood furniture is made by carefully moistening the wood, bending the pieces and allowing them to harden, so that they can ultimately take on shapes, patterns and designs not normally associated with wood. In the 1830s, Thonet began to refine his wood-bending technique and integrated it into furniture design.
